This is a one semester graduate course in Classical Mechanics. The main part of my lecture will be based on the textbook Classical Mechanics by by Goldstein, Poole and Safko (third edition)). This book is available in the University book store but can also be ordered online. This book is quite different from older versions of "Goldstein". The first lecture will be on Wednesday September 3th at 9.35 am in room P112 of the Physics building.
The following is a list of topics to be discussed in this lecture.
| Lagrangian | Canonical Equations |
| Euler-Lagrange Equation | Canonical Transformations |
| Noether's Theorem | Poisson Brackets |
| Kepler's Problem | Liouville Theorem |
| Scattering | Hanilton-Jacobi Equations |
| Rutherford's Formula | Adiabatic Invariants |
| Small Oscillations | Chaotic Motion |
| Normal Modes | Poincar\'e Sections |
| Parametric Resonances | Invariant Tori |
| Rigid Body Motion | Maps |
| Euler Angles | Period Doubling |
| Asymmetric Top | Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser Theorem |
